Congestion & Breakouts
Congestion & Breakout Treatments Sunshine Coast
Blackheads, clogged pores, recurring breakouts or skin that never quite feels clear?
Congestion and breakouts can affect almost any skin type including skin that is dry or dehydrated and treating them effectively often requires more than simply using stronger products or trying to “dry out” the skin.
At That Skin Clinic in Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast, we take a personalised approach to congested and breakout-prone skin. Rather than treating every breakout as acne, we look at your skin barrier, oil production, congestion, current skincare, lifestyle and breakout patterns before recommending treatment.
Depending on your skin, your treatment plan may include professional enzymes, AHA and BHA treatments, chemical peels, extractions, LED therapy, skin needling, tailored facials and personalised home care.
What Is Congested Skin?
Congestion occurs when oil, dead skin cells and other debris accumulate within the pores.
It may appear as:
- Blackheads
- Whiteheads
- Small bumps beneath the skin
- Clogged or enlarged-looking pores
- Uneven or bumpy texture
- Excess oil
- Recurring pimples
- Breakouts around the chin, cheeks or forehead
Congestion can sometimes progress into inflammatory breakouts, particularly when the follicle becomes increasingly blocked and inflamed.
Why Am I Suddenly Breaking Out?
Breakouts don't always have one simple cause.
Your skin can be influenced by a combination of factors, including:
- Hormonal changes
- Excess oil production
- Build-up of dead skin cells
- Occlusive or unsuitable skincare
- Makeup and hair products
- Stress
- Heat and sweating
- Picking or squeezing
- Over-exfoliation
- A compromised skin barrier
- Certain medications
- Lifestyle and environmental factors
This is why simply adding more acne products isn't always the answer. Sometimes we see clients who have become so focused on clearing their breakouts that they are over-cleansing and over-exfoliating, leaving the skin irritated, dehydrated and more difficult to manage.
Congestion vs Acne: What's the Difference?
Congested skin doesn't necessarily mean you have acne. You may experience blackheads, whiteheads and occasional breakouts without having persistent inflammatory acne.
Acne is a more complex inflammatory skin condition that can include comedones, papules, pustules, nodules and cysts. Understanding what we're dealing with helps determine how aggressively or conservatively your skin should be treated.
If your breakouts are severe, painful, cystic, suddenly worsening or likely to require prescription management, we may recommend assessment by your GP or dermatologist alongside your cosmetic skin treatment.
Treatments for Congestion & Breakouts
There is no single “breakout facial” that is appropriate for everyone. At That Skin Clinic, treatments are selected according to your skin's current condition.
BHA Treatments
Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA), most commonly salicylic acid, is oil-soluble, making it particularly useful for oily and congested skin.
BHA treatments may help improve the appearance of:
- Blackheads
- Whiteheads
- Blocked pores
- Excess oil
- Uneven texture
- Breakout-prone skin
The strength and frequency of treatment will depend on your skin and current home-care routine.
AHA Treatments
Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) provide controlled exfoliation of the skin's surface and may be incorporated when congestion occurs alongside dullness, uneven texture or superficial pigmentation.
We select acids based on your skin rather than assuming stronger exfoliation will produce a better result.
Enzyme Treatments
Professional enzyme treatments offer another way of supporting superficial skin renewal.
They can be particularly useful where there is a build-up of dead skin cells contributing to dullness, roughness or congestion, or when a gentler approach is appropriate.
Professional Extractions
Where appropriate, we may perform careful professional extractions to remove selected blackheads and congestion.
Extractions are combined with an overall treatment strategy rather than aggressively squeezing every visible pore.
Chemical Peels
Professional chemical peels may be recommended for more persistent congestion, breakouts, uneven texture and post-breakout marks.
The peel selected will depend on your skin type, barrier health, breakout activity and treatment goals.
LED Light Therapy
LED therapy can be incorporated into a breakout-prone skin program as a non-invasive treatment.
Depending on the concern, different wavelengths may be selected to support the skin and complement your other professional treatments.
For clients experiencing ongoing breakouts, we may recommend a course of LED treatments rather than relying solely on occasional facials.
What About the Marks Left After Breakouts?
Sometimes the breakout disappears but the mark remains.
Red marks following inflammation are often referred to as post-inflammatory erythema (PIE), while brown or darker marks may be post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).
These aren't necessarily true acne scars.
Once active breakouts are under better control, we can assess whether additional treatments are appropriate for the remaining redness, pigmentation or texture.
If structural acne scarring is present, we may create a separate treatment plan incorporating treatments such as skin needling or fractional laser resurfacing when appropriate.
Should I Squeeze Blackheads and Pimples?
Generally, no.
Picking and repeatedly squeezing breakouts can increase inflammation and trauma to the surrounding skin. This can increase the likelihood of lingering redness, pigmentation and potentially scarring.
If congestion needs extracting, we'll determine whether professional extraction is appropriate during your treatment.
Skincare for Congested & Breakout-Prone Skin
One of the biggest misconceptions about congested skin is that it needs to feel extremely clean, tight or dry.
It doesn't.
Stripping the skin with harsh cleansers and excessive exfoliation can compromise the skin barrier and create additional irritation.
Your home-care routine may include a combination of:
- Gentle cleansing
- Appropriate AHA or BHA ingredients
- Barrier-supportive hydration
- Non-comedogenic moisturisation
- Targeted active ingredients
- Daily broad-spectrum SPF
We keep routines purposeful rather than recommending unnecessary products simply because your skin is breaking out.
Stop Guessing What Your Skin Needs
If you've tried scrubs, acids, spot treatments and different skincare routines but your congestion keeps returning, adding another active ingredient may not be the answer.
We want to understand why your skin is behaving the way it is first.
For mild congestion, blackheads and occasional breakouts, a Tailored Facial may be the perfect starting point. For persistent or more complex breakouts, we recommend beginning with a Skin Consultation so we can develop a structured treatment and home-care plan.
