Sun Damage & Pigmentation
Sun Damage Treatment Sunshine Coast
Living on the Sunshine Coast means our skin is exposed to a significant amount of UV radiation throughout the year. Over time, repeated sun exposure can contribute to pigmentation, sunspots, facial redness, broken capillaries, uneven skin tone, fine lines and changes in skin texture… collectively referred to as photodamage or photoageing.
At That Skin Clinic in Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast, we offer personalised cosmetic treatments designed to improve the visible signs of sun damage and support healthier-looking, more resilient skin.
Depending on your skin, your treatment plan may include IPL, Picosecond laser, fractional Er:YAG laser resurfacing, chemical peels, skin needling, LED therapy and professional home care.
What Does Sun Damage Look Like?
Sun damage doesn't always present as one obvious concern.
Years of cumulative UV exposure can contribute to several visible changes in the skin, including:
- Brown spots and uneven pigmentation
- Sunspots and freckles
- Facial redness
- Visible broken capillaries
- Uneven skin tone
- Rough or uneven texture
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Loss of firmness and elasticity
- Dullness and changes in overall skin quality
You may have several of these concerns at the same time, which is why we often take a combined approach rather than treating one isolated symptom.
How Does the Sun Age Our Skin?
UV radiation can affect structures within the skin that are responsible for its colour, strength and appearance.
Repeated exposure contributes to changes in melanin production, superficial blood vessels, collagen and elastin, which is why long-term sun exposure can result in both pigmentation and vascular changes as well as premature skin ageing.
Sun damage is cumulative.
While cosmetic treatments can improve many of its visible effects, protecting your skin from ongoing UV exposure remains one of the most important parts of maintaining your results.
Sun Damage Treatments at That Skin Clinic in Mooloolaba, Sunshine Coast.
There isn't one treatment that is best for every type of sun damage.
During your consultation, we'll assess whether your primary concern is pigmentation, vascular redness, texture, skin ageing or a combination and recommend treatment accordingly.
IPL for Sun Damage
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) can be particularly useful when sun damage presents as a combination of superficial pigmentation and visible redness.
Controlled pulses of light target specific chromophores within the skin, including melanin in pigmentation and haemoglobin within visible blood vessels.
Depending on your skin and concerns, IPL may help improve the appearance of:
- Sunspots
- Freckles
- Uneven pigmentation
- Diffuse facial redness
- Broken capillaries
- Uneven skin tone
A course of treatments may be recommended for more widespread photodamage.
Picosecond Laser for Pigmentation
Our HandPico 1064/532 nm laser may be used for selected pigmentation concerns where targeted laser treatment is appropriate.
Pico laser delivers very short pulses of energy to target suitable pigment while treatment parameters are selected according to the individual concern and skin type.
Fractional Er:YAG Laser Resurfacing
Where sun damage is associated with more significant changes in skin texture, fine lines and overall skin quality, fractional laser resurfacing may be considered.
Our Er:YAG 2940 nm laser creates controlled microscopic treatment zones to stimulate the skin's repair response and collagen remodelling.
It may form part of a progressive skin rejuvenation plan for suitable clients.
Chemical Peels
Professional chemical peels can help improve superficial pigmentation, dullness, uneven texture and overall skin clarity.
The type and strength of peel used will depend on your skin condition, barrier health, pigmentation risk and treatment goals.
Skin Needling
Professional skin needling stimulates the skin's natural repair response and collagen production.
It may be incorporated into a sun-damage treatment program when concerns such as texture, fine lines and overall skin quality are a priority.
Sunspots Need to Be Assessed Before Treatment
This is particularly important when treating sun-damaged skin. Not every brown or pigmented spot should be removed cosmetically.
Sun exposure is a major risk factor for skin cancer, and cosmetic laser or IPL treatment should not be used to simply remove a lesion that requires medical assessment.
If a spot is new, changing, irregular, unexplained or otherwise concerning, we may recommend assessment by a GP, skin cancer doctor or dermatologist before proceeding with cosmetic treatment.
Where appropriate, we may also request medical clearance before treating an individual pigmented lesion.
That Skin Clinic does not diagnose skin cancer or determine whether a suspicious lesion is benign.
Can Sun Damage Be Reversed?
We prefer to talk about improving the visible signs of sun damage rather than reversing sun damage. Treatments can significantly improve the appearance of concerns such as pigmentation, redness, uneven texture and some signs of photoageing, but they cannot erase a lifetime of UV exposure.
New sun damage can also develop.
For this reason, long-term results depend on combining professional treatments with consistent sun protection and appropriate home care.
Protecting Your Skin From Further Sun Damage
Prevention is one of the most important parts of any sun-damage treatment plan.
We recommend making sun protection part of your everyday routine, including:
- Daily broad-spectrum SPF
- Reapplying sunscreen when appropriate
- Seeking shade during periods of high UV exposure
- Wearing protective clothing, hats and sunglasses
- Avoiding unnecessary intentional tanning
- Using professional home care appropriate for your skin
Regular skin checks are also important, particularly for people with significant cumulative sun exposure or other risk factors for skin cancer.
A Multi-Treatment Approach to Sun-Damaged Skin
One of the advantages of treating sun damage at That Skin Clinic is that we aren't limited to one technology.
For example, one client may primarily need IPL for pigmentation and redness, while another may benefit from a staged combination of IPL followed by fractional laser resurfacing or skin needling to address both colour and texture.
We build your treatment plan around your skin rather than trying to fit every client into the same treatment.
Start With a Sun Damage & Skin Consultation
If you've noticed increasing pigmentation, sunspots, redness, broken capillaries, uneven texture or other visible signs of sun exposure, start with a skin consultation. Our $75 Skin Consultation is fully redeemable toward recommended treatment or skincare.
We'll assess your cosmetic skin concerns, discuss your treatment history and goals, and create a personalised plan. Depending on your skin, this may include IPL, Pico second laser, fractional Er:YAG resurfacing, chemical peels, skin needling, LED therapy and professional home care.
If we identify a lesion that should be medically assessed before cosmetic treatment, we'll recommend the appropriate next step.
