Rosacea Treatment & Redness-Prone Skin Sunshine Coast

Persistent facial redness, flushing, visible capillaries or skin that seems to react to everything?

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that commonly affects the central face, particularly the cheeks, nose, chin and forehead. It can present differently from person to person and may fluctuate between periods where the skin appears relatively calm and times when redness and inflammation become more noticeable.

At That Skin Clinic in Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast, we take a considered approach to rosacea and redness-prone skin, focusing on supporting the skin barrier and addressing visible concerns such as persistent redness and superficial blood vessels with appropriate cosmetic treatments.

What Does Rosacea Look Like?

Rosacea can present in several different ways.

Common signs can include:

  • Persistent facial redness
  • Frequent flushing or blushing
  • Visible broken capillaries
  • Redness across the cheeks and nose
  • Sensitive, reactive or easily irritated skin
  • Burning, warmth or stinging
  • Acne-like bumps or pustules
  • Dryness and compromised barrier function

Some people experience predominantly vascular redness and visible capillaries, while others experience inflammatory bumps and sensitivity.

Importantly, not all facial redness is rosacea. Redness can have several possible causes, which is why unexplained or persistent symptoms may require medical assessment.

What Causes Rosacea?

The exact cause of rosacea is complex and not fully understood. Research suggests that a combination of genetic, immune, vascular, environmental and microbial factors may contribute to the condition.

People with rosacea can also notice that certain factors trigger or intensify flushing and redness.

Commonly reported triggers include:

  • Sun exposure
  • Heat and hot environments
  • Hot showers
  • Alcohol
  • Spicy foods
  • Hot drinks
  • Stress
  • Strenuous exercise
  • Some skincare products
  • Over-exfoliation
  • Rapid changes in temperature

Triggers vary considerably between individuals. Part of managing redness-prone skin is understanding what appears to aggravate your skin rather than following a restrictive list unnecessarily.

Rosacea and the Skin Barrier

One of the most important considerations with rosacea-prone skin is the skin barrier.

When the barrier is compromised, the skin can lose moisture more easily and become increasingly sensitive to environmental factors and skincare ingredients.

For this reason, we don't believe rosacea-prone skin needs to be aggressively exfoliated or constantly treated with stronger products.

Our approach generally begins with calming the skin, supporting barrier function and establishing appropriate home care before introducing more advanced treatments.

Cosmetic Treatments for Rosacea-Related Redness

Rosacea cannot be permanently cured through cosmetic treatment, but some of its visible features can be managed and improved.

Depending on your skin and the concerns present, your personalised treatment plan at That Skin Clinic may include:

IPL for Redness

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) may be suitable for reducing the appearance of diffuse facial redness and superficial visible blood vessels associated with rosacea.

Light energy is absorbed by haemoglobin within targeted vessels, creating controlled heat that can gradually reduce their visible appearance.

A course of treatments may be recommended depending on the extent of the vascular concern and how your skin responds.

Laser for Visible Capillaries

For suitable clients, laser technology may be incorporated into a treatment plan to target specific visible vascular concerns.

Treatment selection and parameters are carefully considered according to your skin type, vascular presentation and treatment history.

LED Light Therapy

LED therapy may be incorporated into a rosacea or redness-prone skin program as a gentle, non-invasive treatment to support the skin and help manage inflammation.

It may also be used alongside other treatments or during periods where the skin requires a more conservative approach.

Barrier-Supportive Skin Treatments

Sometimes the best place to start isn't with a laser.

When skin is particularly reactive, dry or compromised, we may initially focus on gentle professional treatments and home care designed to support hydration and barrier function before progressing to vascular treatments.

Skincare for Rosacea-Prone Skin

A complicated skincare routine isn't necessarily a better one. For redness-prone and reactive skin, we generally focus on creating a consistent routine that supports rather than overwhelms the skin.

This may include:

  • A gentle cleanser
  • Barrier-supportive hydration
  • Carefully selected calming ingredients
  • An appropriate moisturiser
  • Daily broad-spectrum SPF
  • Avoiding unnecessary scrubs and aggressive exfoliation
  • Gradually introducing active ingredients where appropriate

Your recommendations will depend on your individual skin rather than simply being based on the rosacea label.

Can Rosacea Be Cured?

Rosacea is considered a chronic condition, meaning there currently isn't a permanent cure. However, its symptoms and visible features can often be managed through a combination of appropriate skincare, trigger management, medical treatment when required and cosmetic treatment for concerns such as persistent redness and visible capillaries.

Maintenance may also be required because vascular redness can recur or new vessels may become visible over time.

When Should I See a Doctor or Dermatologist?

That Skin Clinic provides cosmetic skin treatments and does not diagnose rosacea or prescribe medication.

If you have not been diagnosed and are experiencing persistent or unexplained facial redness, significant inflammation, recurrent pustules or other concerning symptoms, we may recommend assessment by your GP or dermatologist.

Rosacea can also affect the eyes. If you experience persistent eye irritation, redness, pain, light sensitivity or changes to your vision, medical assessment is important.

Medical treatment and cosmetic skin treatment can also work alongside each other where appropriate.
